Why should cables and components be labelled?

In the event of a fault, it should be possible to make quick repairs. If a cable or fuse is responsible for a problem, it should be replaced quickly. But how can the fault source be identified in a control cabinet if it has not been identified where the cable leads?

Inadequate marking of the fuse box can cause an electrician to sweat and cause unnecessary work. Without clear labelling, it becomes difficult to sort and resolve the problem quickly. This can only be done using the process of elimination. In an industrial environment, where everything depends on proper functioning, it’s a pure nightmare!

Failure to label industrial systems results in massive consequential costs.

However, the clear labelling of cables and components enables problems to be identified quickly and repairs and maintenance to be carried out easily and safely!

Put an end to the chaos- with clear labelling!

The benefits of cable and component marking at a glance

You benefit from marking and labelling systems for cables, wires, single cores and other electrical system components:

Saves time and costs

  • Quick orientation
  • Easy classification
  • Repairs and maintenance are carried out more quickly
  • Machine downtimes can be significantly reduced

Safety

A safe, clear marking
  • increases general occupational safety
  • minimises the risk of confusion

Order and organisation

Careful, professional, uniform and contrasting labelling

Meeting normative requirements

Required for equipment marking according to DIN EN 60204-1 (VDE 0113 part 1) and for displaying circuit diagrams according to DIN EN 61082-1

Why buy marking systems from LAPP?

We have been dealing with cables and wires since 1957; marking systems have been part of LAPP's regular business since 1978. As a result, we have more than 40 years experience in marking and labelling cables and components in an industrial environment.

Our FLEXIMARK® product brand stands for flexible markings. For this reason, FLEXIMARK® relies on a wide range of solutions for almost every environment. Oil drilling platforms, industrial plants, bridges, wind and solar parks, chemical factories or the food industry – the marking options are as varied as the areas of application of cables.

FLEXIMARK® is not just a long-established product brand, it also has its own company and production site in Sweden with autonomous, technical customer support.

Overview of the benefits of using FLEXIMARK® markings:

In applications where space is a constraint (such as in control cabinets), space-saving wrapping labels are used for cable marking, markers are used for threading single cores or shrink tubes are used for cables and single cores.
FLEXIMARK® markings are not only visually appealing, they are also designed in a useful way. The labels are impressive with their contrasting colours and high print resolution, making them extremely easy to read.

What properties should markings have for the industrial sector?

Harsh conditions, which frequently occur in industrial environments, demand high-quality and therefore reliable quality solutions.

To ensure that markings do not flake off, swell, scratch, fade over time and become illegible, they should have the following resistance, depending on the application area:

UV resistance

Markings used outdoors should be UV-resistant and be able to withstand all weather conditions.

Temperature resistance

For example, extreme temperatures can prevail in wind turbines or tunnel construction. High-quality markings withstand a wide temperature range.

Mechanical resistance

If markings are not installed in a protected control cabinet, but in places where friction from other cables and a lot of movement of the application itself can be expected, markings could be severely affected unless the correct, scratch-resistant products have been chosen.
Learn more

Oil resistance

In industrial production lines, for example, cables are sometimes permanently or temporarily exposed to various oils. The markings used there also need to cope with the lubricating, cutting and cooling oils and not suffer any damage from them.

Chemical resistance

If markings are exposed to chemical substances such as acids and alkalis or cleaning agents, robust materials should be used that can be used to maintain the function of the markings for many years. Even if cleaning processes frequently occur, as is the case in the food industry, the markings must not deteriorate.

Detectable

If a label or cable tie accidentally gets into the direct food production environment of food, it can be easier to locate if it is detectable. Detectable products contain minute metal particles in the material that can be detected by X-ray or magnetic metal detectors. Expensive plant downtimes can thus be avoided.

How to find your exact marking

We will show you how you can soon find your way in our extensive portfolio with 4 simple questions and quickly find a marking that is exactly tailored to you.

First ask yourself

1. Already printed

You can easily compile your marking on site from a wide range of pre-assembled solutions consisting of numbers, letters and symbols.

Product example:

  • Numbers, letters and character holders for individual design of markings
  • Pre-printed labels for safety signage
  • Mobile printer for fast marking on site

2. Have it printed

Order individual labels from us. Exactly according to your needs, but with no internal investment required. We design the markings based on your specifications and deliver them to you within a few working days.

Product example:

  • Stainless steel plates
  • Plastic shrink hoses and cable labels

3. Print yourself

Create markings and labels as desired using a commercial laser printer or - if the printing is to be even more durable and resistant - a Thermal transfer printer.

Product example:

  • Laser printing labels
  • Thermal transfer printer labels
  • Thermal transfer printer

The next step is to determine what you want to mark:

  • Single cores
  • Wires
  • Components

This question arises in particular for marking single cores, which are no longer as easily accessible after wiring.

We offer markings that can be affixed BEFORE installation as they have to be pushed over the core, as well as solutions for marking wires AFTER installation that can be clipped onto the core afterwards like a kind of clip. No matter what you want to mark or label – we will find the right product for you.

Clarify the applications in which the marking is used and the environmental influences to which it will be exposed. Basically, all FLEXIMARK® markings were designed for harsh environments. However, depending on the resistance required, different materials (plastic or stainless steel) and different variants are suitable.
