Which material requirements must apply to a product in order to meet the intended application? Does a material actually react to its surroundings in the way that is desired in each individual case?

Depending on the materials that make up a product, it will differ in its sensitivity to acids, alkalis, oils and corrosion and in its reaction to the effects of a fire. Chemical properties are therefore an important selection criterion when deciding for or against a product.
