What is a brass cable gland?

In general, all cable glands, also known as cable bushings or cable entry systems, are used to insert a cable or insulated conductor into a housing. The cable gland meets the functional requirements for sealing and fastening and strain relief.

Cable glands

Brass cable glands are a type of metal cable glands. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy (CuZnX) with a zinc content of up to 40%. Other metals may also be added in small quantities. Brass offers good chemical resistance and particular mechanical stability, which is why it is very popular in the manufacture of cable glands.

The majority of LAPP brass cable glands are nickel-plated brass, i.e. they have an additional nickel coating. This is because nickel, which is also a metal, is corrosion-resistant and wear-resistant, thus protecting the brass body from many environmental influences and thus impairments of its function. The corrosion protection effect is confirmed by the salt spray test according to DIN EN ISO 9227, which is used by the brass components of the LAPP cable glands.

Which different brass cable glands are available at LAPP?

Designation: At LAPP, we sell our brass cable glands under the SKINTOP® product brand and the SKINDICHT® sub-brand.

Metal composition: The vast majority of our products within the product group "Brass cable glands" are made of nickel-plated brass as standard. Our portfolio also includes lead-free, nickel-plated brass cable glands.

Why are lead-free cable glands used?

We are sure that if you want to be successful in the future, you have to focus on sustainability

By developing the right connection solutions for your requirements at an early stage, we enable maximum planning in your long-term projects.

In the background:

For some time now, metallic materials have had to do without lead as an additive to make them easier to process - with one exception: up to 4 percent is still permitted in copper alloys - including brass, the popular metal for cable glands. this exemption was due to expire on July 21, 2021, but will now be delayed a little longer. If the exception ends as planned, brass will no longer be allowed to contain any lead, as stipulated by the European Directive RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances). In the REACH chemical regulation, lead is also on the candidate list for “Substances of very high concern”, which could soon be prohibited.

LAPP thought ahead and launched the first lead-free SKINTOP® cable gland on the market. For you and your applications.

More on the topic of lead-free
SKINTOP® The new lead-free brass cable gland - made by LAPP

When are brass cable glands used?

Often, the material of the cable gland alone does not determine its use.

The type of cable used which is to be routed, the environment in which the cable gland is to be used and the number of properties that it must fulfil also play a role.

A device or machine can have both plastic and brass cable glands. Always consider brass cable glands if you expect the product to be subjected to high chemical and mechanical stress (only stainless steel cable glands can outperform this and are even more resistant). Our products are typically used in these areas:

  • Mechanical and plant engineering
  • Control cabinet construction
  • Wind power
  • Agriculture
  • Building installation
  • Rail transport
  • Shipbuilding

Why buy brass cable glands from LAPP?

Extraordinary special products for challenging special applications

Would you like to purchase a brass cable gland? We have compiled the most important in-house developments from this product group, with which we stand out on the market. Experience it for yourself:

Looking for a cable gland that can be installed safely, quickly and easily and offers optimum EMC protection? Then it's best to use our SKINTOP® MS-M BRUSH. Thanks to its innovative – and therefore patented – 360° brass brush, it offers low-resistance contact between the braided shield and the gland without damaging the braided shield.

For painted, anodised or powder-coated housings, it is recommended to use a lock nut with cutting edges. The SKINDICHT® SM-PE-M ensures optimum contact with the housing, thus protecting your application against electromagnetic interference and equipotential bonding.

Do you use plastic glands? The perfect time to present our innovative EMC extension: SKINTOP® BRUSH ADD-ON. The world's first patented active EMC lock nut. Cuts into the housing while simultaneously offering optimum, low-resistance 360° screen contact. You can find further information about our brush system here.

SKINTOP® MS-M BRUSH
Your flat cables require special support. This is why we developed SKINTOP® FLAT with a special sealing design that enables effective sealing for both angular and round cable contours.
SKINTOP® FLAT
In applications with recurring movements, especially in electrical hand-held devices, it can sometimes be so excessive that conventional cable glands cannot provide sufficient protection against excessive bending. For these applications, we recommend the SKINTOP® BS-M METAL with stainless steel spring protection spiral and protective ring. Kinking or breaking the core were things of the past. This cable gland has been tested for bending and breakage.
SKINTOP® BS-M METAL
If a cable is tightened correctly or bent back and forth, the requirements for the right cable gland also increase. With the SKINTOP® GRIP-M, LAPP has a cable gland designed for such demanding applications. Its double lever ensures reliable bending and anti-kink protection of the cable as the cable is clamped on all sides. This achieves ten times higher strain relief in comparison to conventional cable glands. It is primarily intended for use in machine and systems parts that are moved, such as foot switches, circular saws or push-button control units.
SKINTOP® GRIP-M

In applications where people and property need to be protected as effectively as possible against the effects of a fire, care must be taken to ensure complete absence of halogens when selecting products. The materials should always be halogen-free so that no toxic gases are formed in the event of a fire.

The SKINTOP® MS-HF-M with halogen-free seals is also particularly suitable for railway technology as its materials are self-extinguishing in the event of a fire. It meets the fire safety requirements in accordance with DIN EN 45545-2 and DIN EN 45545-3 (hazard level HL3 or fire resistance class E30) and can be used in rail vehicles in line with standards.
