eMobility

Connection solutions for E-mobility

Electromobility is the future. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects electric cars and plug-in hybrids to achieve a global market share of over 40 per cent by 2030. LAPP is a strong partner and offers infrastructure operators, charging station and vehicle manufacturers user-friendly charging cables for charging at public AC charging stations and at household or industrial sockets. For maximum flexibility in the production process, we also offer unassembled charging cables by the metre. These are ideal for wall box manufacturers and assemblers who want to realise individual solutions – efficiently, precisely and in proven LAPP quality.

You can read the IEA report on the agency's official website:

eMobility charging solutions

Charging cables for electric cars in various variants, lengths and colours as well as mobile chargers for electric cars. With our mobile charging solutions, you can charge electric vehicles flexibly at household sockets or industrial sockets – ideal for use in fleets, workshops and for private individuals with electric cars.

eMobility cables

Unassembled charging cables by the metre are ideal for wallbox manufacturers and assemblers. They form the ideal basis for reliable and safe charging processes in electric and plug-in hybrid cars. The cables fulfil all relevant IEC and EN product requirements.

What requirements do cables and wires for electric vehicles have to fulfil?

In e-mobility, wires and cables must meet the highest technical requirements - especially in the area of charging infrastructure. Whether for wallboxes, charging stations or fast charging stations: The cables used must not only be powerful, but also particularly robust, safe and durable.

High current rating

Cables with a large cross-section are required for charging electric vehicles. These cables are necessary to safely transmit high charging power (AC and DC). This applies in particular to fast charging stations, which offer charging capacities of up to 350 kW.

Good weather and UV resistance

Many charging cables are used outdoors and have to withstand extreme temperatures, moisture and UV radiation.

High mechanical stability

Cables in e-mobility are exposed to frequent bending, pulling and overrunning. Robust insulation and high flexibility are therefore essential.

Safety standards and norms

To ensure maximum safety, cables must comply with all relevant IEC and EN product requirements as well as other international standards.

Flame retardant and halogen-free

For use in public areas, it is important that cables do not release toxic gases in the event of fire and are flame-retardant.

What charging modes are there for charging electric cars and how do they differ?

When charging electric cars, a distinction is made between four standardised charging modes in accordance with the international standard IEC 61851. These so-called "modes" define the type of communication between the vehicle and the charging infrastructure as well as the safety mechanisms during the charging process. For companies that plan or sell charging infrastructure, a basic understanding of these operating modes is essential.

  • Application: Mobile charging cable with integrated protection circuit "In-Cable Control and Protection Device" (IC-CPD).

  • Features: Charging at household or industrial sockets with additional safety communication via the cable.

  • Advantage: Greater safety than Mode 1, can be used flexibly.

  • Application: Standard in the public and semi-public sector as well as in companies.

  • Features: Direct communication between vehicle and charging point via a permanently installed charging cable or a socket with a type 2 connection.

  • Advantages: High charging power, integrated safety functions, load management possible.

Assembled Mode 3 AC charging cable
  • Application: Fast charging stations along motorways or in logistics centres.

  • Features: Direct current charging with external control of the charging power.

  • Advantages: Very short charging times, ideal for fleets and long-distance vehicles.

Assembled Mode 4 DC charging cable

In addition to the charging modes mentioned above, there is also Mode 1 for charging at the household socket without charging monitoring and protective devices. For safety reasons, this fashion is no longer authorised in many countries. For this reason, LAPP does not have any Mode 1 products in its portfolio.

What is the difference between AC and DC charging cables?

When charging electric vehicles, choosing the right charging cable plays a key role - especially in a commercial environment. A basic distinction is made between AC charging cables, which use alternating current, and DC charging cables, which use direct current.

AC charging cable (alternating current)

AC charging cable (alternating current)
AC charging cables are the most common solution for normal charging at wallboxes or public charging points. Here, the electricity is supplied as alternating current and only converted into direct current in the vehicle by the onboard charger. The charging power is usually limited to up to 22 kW - ideal for overnight charging or longer downtimes.

DC charging cable (direct current)

DC charging cable (direct current)
DC charging cables are used for fast charging stations. The electricity is already converted into direct current outside the vehicle and fed directly into the battery. This enables significantly higher charging capacities of 50 kW to over 350 kW - perfect for fast charging on the move or in commercial fleet operations.

Why are unassembled charging cables ideal for wallbox manufacturers and assemblers?

Unassembled charging cables offer wallbox manufacturers and assemblers maximum flexibility and efficiency in production. They can be customised to meet specific requirements - whether in terms of cable length, connector type or technical specifications. This allows customised charging solutions to be realised for different markets and applications.

Modular and scalable solutions are crucial, especially in the rapidly growing electromobility market. Unassembled charging cables support agile production and make it possible to realise smaller quantities economically - a clear competitive advantage for providers of wallboxes and charging solutions.

Our unassembled charging cable ÖLFLEX® CHARGE AC charging cable Mode 3 with type H07BZ5-F forms the ideal basis for reliable and safe charging processes in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The bulk cable with halogen-free and resistant TMPU outer sheath fulfils all relevant IEC and EN product requirements.
