On the safe side: norms and standards for the solar industry

Standards provide guidelines for manufacturers, installers and inspectors to ensure that photovoltaic systems provide electricity safely, efficiently and reliably by complying with the quality and safety regulations. Solar solutions from LAPP meet these standards. An overview of the key standards.

VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies)

The VDE is a German association that develops standards and guidelines for electrical and electronic products. VDE standards cover different aspects of solar technology, including the safety, performance and installation of photovoltaic systems.

IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)

This global non-profit committee is active in more than 170 countries and develops international standards for electrical engineering, electronics and related technologies. The IEC standards for solar technology include guidelines for photovoltaic modules, inverters, power measurement, installation, safety and more.

BS (British Standards)

The national standardization body in Great Britain was the first of its kind in the world. Its standards include guidelines for various aspects of solar technology, which are similar to the IEC standards but can also contain specific requirements for the British market.

The growing system voltage due to rapidly advancing modern PV systems requires equally more powerful cables and components. At LAPP we have been addressing and tackling these issues for many years through new innovative solutions. To meet the constantly arising challenges caused by system voltage increases, we have developed high-quality cables and components with long service life and extreme robustness as these types of products are constantly exposed to the wind and weather. Reliable performance requires exceptional weather resistance to heat, wind and frost – and rodent protection is also recommended. Also consider that, modern PV systems can supply energy for several decades.

To harness the full potential of the power supply, the relatively young industry is working on new technologies and applications such as organic photovoltaics (OPV). The photovoltaic industry’s requirements for cabling solutions range from large, robust cables for direct burial in power stations through to complex connection systems for flexible OPV modules.

All these requirements pose a major challenge – yet we are able to offer successful solutions due to our experience and expertise.

High-quality products and easy assembly are crucial factors when it comes to making a selection. If one cable becomes brittle or malfunctions, it affects all other cables from the same reel. Since new installations and removals can be very expensive, investing in durable and high-quality materials is worthwhile in the long run.

When purchasing a solar connector, please be aware of the following points:

  • Product selection: use the EPIC® SOLAR 4Plus male connector and the EPIC® SOLAR 4Plus female connector made of high-quality, UV-resistant plastic.
  • Crimp connections which have been carried out in a regulation-compliant manner are the best connections between cables and connectors. They reliably transmit solar energy throughout the photovoltaic system’s entire service life – over decades. Our LAPP connector system has a crimp termination for cable cross-sections of up to 10 mm².
  • The TÜV certification and the tests in accordance with the standard DIN EN 62852 (relevant for connectors for DC voltage applications in photovoltaic systems) indicate quality.

We are constantly developing and improving our products and services. Striving for the greatest possible durability, robustness and extreme flexibility is what drives us. Thanks to special jacket materials, LAPP solar cables are not only flame retardant and halogen-free, but also resistant to ozone and UV. Our solar cables and solar connectors can also withstand extreme weather conditions such as heat, wind and frost, making them perfect for use in your outdoor systems.

The products in a solar system are exposed to the sun for years. The transmission of energy and the high resistance heat up cables and connectors, while the constant alternation between warm and cold due to the sun’s rays and heating during operation causes cables and connectors to become brittle.

A variety of inspections and performance tests have been carried out with our ÖLFLEX® cables, solar cables, SKINTOP® cable glands and EPIC® SOLAR connectors in close cooperation with customers, the TÜV and the North American UL approval institute. This enables us to guarantee our quality standards. Our products are suitable for use worldwide and, of course, are RoHS-compliant.

Can't find the right solar product for your needs? Together, we can develop individual solutions, customized for you. Our experts would be happy to guide you.

By the way, expert knowledge is vital not only for selecting components, but also for assembling and properly using the components. We would be glad to assist you on site as well.
