What are cables for standard applications?


Cables for standard applications are power and control cables with a simple design that are designed for a wide range of applications. The behavior of these cables is relatively unspectacular in terms of their mechanical, chemical or temperature resistance, as well as their fire properties. It is precisely because they were not specially developed for one or the other application that they are suitable for a very wide range of applications.

Where are cables for standard applications used?

Our cables for standard applications are usually installed fixed or occasionally moved in industrial applications. This often happens on cable trays. These cable types often take over the wiring of machines and control cabinets or wired control circuits, both inside machines and across systems. Thanks to their fine-wire stranded conductors (class 5), they are also used as an easy-to-install alternative to installation cables (class 1 or 2), which can also be used to achieve narrower bending radii.

Even in standard applications, safe, reliable, durable and easy to handle products are required!

PVC as an extremely versatile material for insulation and jacket


The electrical and mechanical properties as well as the heat and cold resistance of a cable are largely determined by the insulation and jacket materials used.

Polyvinylchloride (PVC), a thermoplastic material, has proven itself for our cables for standard applications. It can be used in a wide range of applications with the aid of additives. We use PVC jacket and insulation compounds that meet both the typical standard requirements and our LAPP factory standards that go beyond these.  This enables the cables to be optimally equipped for use at a later date.

Our cables for standard applications usually have a gray outer jacket (old DESINA color code for control cables). Due to their use, black, transparent and occasionally blue, orange or yellow jackets can also be found.

The cables offer flame retardance and vary from type to type in terms of resistance to mineral oil-based lubricants and other oils. They are suitable for the typical temperature ranges in industrial plants. The majority of the cables in this product group can still be used with occasional flexing even in temperatures below freezing.

How are cables for standard applications differentiated at LAPP?

Within the product group, choose between cables with 300/500 V, 450/750 V or 0.6/1 kV.

Different conductor cross-sections and numbers of conductors are required depending on the intended use.  
Most cables for standard applications are at least two-wire and start at 0.5 mm². For control cables (core identification is usually by numbers), the number of cores can be 50 or more. The maximum conductor cross-section is often 2.5 mm2, but can be higher depending on the type. Connecting cables (core marking is typically by color) can also be found in this product group with four cores with up to 240 mm2 of conductor cross-section.

What are power and control cables?
The materials used for the insulation and jacket determine the temperature properties of a cable. For the most part, the cables for standard applications can withstand conductor temperatures of up to +70°C and are quite flexible at cold temperatures (-5°C to -30°C). However, not all cables are suitable for outdoor use without additional protection, as the UV radiation could impair the cable’s long term functionality.
There are many sources of electromagnetic interference in industrial plants. If equipment is not sufficiently protected against such interference and does not ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), processes cannot run smoothly and without errors. Depending on how high the risk is, you should choose a screened cable variant.

Our product group also includes certified cables that comply with European or North American design standards. For types that are not based on a design standard, you will sometimes find a VDE registration. Many articles also have a classified fire behavior according to EU Directive 305/2011 (BauPVO/CPR). ÖLFLEX® CLASSIC 110 LT – flexible at low temperatures down to -30°C



Conventional PVC plastic is not actually suitable for low temperatures and quickly becomes brittle and inflexible in the low temperature range of -5°C/-10°C. However, our special product ÖLFLEX® CLASSIC 110 LT is made from a PVC compound that is highly flexible at cold temperatures and can perform its functions even at -30°C.
LT in the product name stands for low temperature.

A blue outer jacket is often used as a color code for intrinsically safe cabling in EX areas. This is also the case for the LAPP cable ÖLFLEX® EB or ÖLFLEX® EB CY (screened) for use in devices, machines and systems with “intrinsically safe” (“i”) ignition protection and for intrinsically safe circuits according to IEC 60079-14 / EN 60079-14 / VDE 0165 (Part 1).

With ÖLFLEX® CONTROL TM and ÖLFLEX® TRAY II (also available in shielded options), we offer cables that have been specially developed for the cabling of industrial and machine tools in the USA. The UL Tray Cable (TC) certification for Exposed Run (ER) not only allows open, i.e. unprotected installation on cable trays, but cable sections that "hang down" from the cable tray or "go in" to the device/motor after the cable tray may also be installed without a protective cable conduit. This is a huge advantage, as it not only simplifies installation, but also makes it even cheaper by omitting cable protection systems.
