Cable protection and guiding systems

Additional protection against external influences and mechanical loads

Cable protection and guiding systems at LAPP consist of a protective cable conduit, a conduit connector and the corresponding accessories. They protect cables perfectly against dust, moisture, mechanical, thermal or chemical influences. Our flexible protective cable conduits are made of plastic, galvanized steel, stainless steel or a combination of these materials. The portfolio also includes parallel corrugated protective cable conduits, large-scale protective cable conduits or resealable protective cable conduits, hoses with a liquid-tight jacket and cable protection hose systems for special applications, e.g. in the Food & Beverage sector or e-mobility. The tools and accessories allow for quick and easy assembly.

What are cable protection and guiding systems?

A cable protection and guiding system offers you the opportunity to additionally protect your cables and wires and to guide them securely.

At LAPP, this refers to flexible protective conduits.

This guide provides you with information about protective conduits and corresponding accessories for applications according to DIN EN IEC 61386-23 (VDE 0605-23:2021-12): Flexible electrical conduit systems. Our cable protection products do not include pneumatic or hydraulic hoses.

Note:

We offer cable protection and cable guiding systems for automated applications in the form of assembled cable chains under the product name SILVYN® CHAIN.

What types of protective conduit systems are available at LAPP?

Tools and accessories

If you are looking for mounting brackets and clamps for fastening, collars and tools for treatment and processing, you are in the right place.

Metal protective conduit systems

We offer helically wound metal protective conduits in various options and for different purposes (e.g. protection against hot chips, electromagnetic compatibility). Many of these cables are corrosion-resistant and mechanically heavy-duty. Conduit connectors include those with ATEX certification for explosive atmospheres.

Protective conduit systems, parallel corrugated or resealable , made of plastic

You are in the right place for this product group if you need robust, parallel corrugated protective conduits or divisible protective conduits that you plan to attach at a later date. You will also find protective conduits in particularly large dimensions for thicker cables or large cable packages. Corresponding conduit connectors and accessories are also available here.

Protective conduit systems for special applications

You should browse this product group for special applications. For example, if you want to protect your cables from extreme heat, if you need a hygienic design with smooth surfaces that is easy to clean, or if you need to label high-voltage systems in the e-mobility sector with warning markings using orange-colored protective conduits.

Metal protective conduit systems with jacket

If you absolutely need liquid-tight protective conduits, choose a metal protective conduit with a jacket. Thin-walled jackets are suitable if the protective conduit system requires a certain degree of flexibility, e.g. to allow a tighter bending radius; thick-walled jackets are suitable if it is assumed that a mechanical influence could affect the protective conduit system (e.g. rock chips or frequent contact with the ground). Conduits with different jacket materials are available.

Plastic protective conduit systems

In this product group, you will find simple and highly flexible all-plastic protective conduits, spiral-reinforced conduits, braided sleeves, suitable conduit connectors and accessories.

What components make up a protective conduit system?

A protective conduit system consists of:

  • A protective conduit
  • A protective conduit connector
  • Suitable protective conduit accessories

Good reasons for a protective conduit system

In which cases are protective conduits indispensable and what functions do they perform in detail?

Function 1: Protect cables and wires

Depending on the material and design, protective conduit systems offer:
  • Reliable protection against dust, moisture, humidity and UV rays
  • Mechanical protection against sharp edges, friction, abrasion or even welding sparks
  • Thermal protection against the effects of extreme heat from flames or liquid metal, or protection against very cold temperatures
  • Chemical protection against substances such as those in cleaning agents, solvents, lubricants, oils and petrol etc.
  • Protection against electromagnetic interference

Function 2: bundling, guiding and thus tidying up cables and wires

In this case, protective conduits act like flexible cable ducts:

the wires and cable bundles packed in it are precisely guided along their installation route. This ensures better organization in the application. Cables that are carefully organized not only look better, they also increase occupational safety by reducing trip hazards.

 A protective conduit system provides your cables and wires with increased dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, strain relief, flexibility and sealing.

Did you know that it can be more cost-effective to buy a less expensive cable and protect it with a protective conduit, instead of buying a more expensive and stable cable?

Where are protective conduits used?

Additional cable protection is very important for numerous industrial areas (e.g. mechanical and plant engineering, machine tool construction, the automotive industry, renewable energies, the beverage and food industry), but is also required and used in public buildings, shipbuilding, rail transport and in many outdoor applications.

Depending on the application, protective conduits and conduit connectors are made of plastic or metal, or a combination of both materials.

All cable types can generally be protected by a protective conduit wherever additional protection is required due to external influences.

Simple protective conduits are suitable for fixed installation; flexible protective cable conduits, on the other hand, are also suitable for dynamic applications.

On the lookout for the ideal protective conduit

Depending on the application, cable protection should have different properties. Not every protective conduit is also suitable for moving applications, can be installed outdoors or in the ground, is liquid-tight or can be mounted at a later date.

  • Should it be heat-resistant to the effects of flames, hot chips and liquid metal?
  • Should it be UV-resistant for outdoor use?
  • Should it be halogen-free to meet the standard requirements in public buildings or railway vehicles?
  • Should it be oil-resistant in order to be used in oily environments?
  • Should it have flame-retardant properties and be self-extinguishing in order to meet defined fire protection requirements?
  • Should it be corrosion-resistant to enable frequent product cleaning or underwater use?
  • Should it be electromagnetically compatible, i.e. provide protection against electromagnetic radiation and minimize the emission of such radiation?
  • Should it be slotted or divisible so that it can be integrated into existing applications at a later date?
  • Should it be highly flexible for use in cable chains?
  • Should it have an anti-static effect, e.g. in areas at risk of explosion, to prevent static loading or discharge, which could lead to the formation of a dangerous spark? Should it have certain certifications (e.g. UL, CSA)?

How to find the perfect conduit system at LAPP?

Ask yourself the following questions:

Application area:

  • inside
  • outside
  • potentially in particularly harsh applications

Temperature ranges:

  • Room temperature
  • Hot
  • Cold

Flexibility:

  • Static use
  • Flexible use

Filling degree:

For flexible use, a maximum degree of filling of 60 - 65% of the inner diameter should be ensured. This means that the cable should occupy less than two thirds of the space.

Installation:

  • Available space
  • Required inner/outer diameter

Material:

  • PVC, Polyamid
  • Metall
  • Kombination

Approvals:

  • UL, CSA
  • VDE
  • DNV
  • EHEDG
  • DIN EN 45554
  • ATEX
Please note the key selection factors:
  • Thread type M, PG or NPT
  • Material
  • IP protection rating
  • Strain relief

3. Then select the accessories you need for the installation.
